Description
Up for sale is a historically fascinating lot of vintage detachable uniform buttons, matching hairpin cotter keys (fasteners), and a period-correct metal storage tin.
Before modern washing machines, delicate mother-of-pearl buttons had to be removed from military, police, railroad, or chef uniforms before laundering to prevent them from shattering. This lot represents a complete "bachelor button" setup from the 1930s–1940s era, safely preserved inside an antique Sharp & Dohme Sucrets tin (pre-1953 merger).
The buttons feature gorgeous natural iridescence, distinct high-luster shell graining, and intact metal wire shanks on the reverse sides.
What is Included in this Lot:
  • 31 Antique Cotter Keys / Pins: Wavy hairpin-style metal fasteners used to slide through the button shanks on the inside of the garment fabric.
  • Group 1 (25 Buttons): Standard medium-sized loose mother-of-pearl shank uniform buttons (approx. 1/2" to 5/8" diameter).
  • Group 2 (10 Buttons): Slightly smaller matched set of loose iridescent mother-of-pearl shank buttons.

Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. The mother-of-pearl faces are bright with beautiful luster, showing only minor age-appropriate wear. All metal loops and links are firmly attached. The Sucrets tin has a clean, highly legible graphic lid with a wonderfully aged patina.
