Vtg 1903 Plaque Bridge Highway Butler Pa Cast iron Antique History Sign Lafayette building or maybe pullman standard railroad company! pretty cool piece of history!!
Key constructions and openings in 1903 included:
Standard Steel Car Company Plant: Opened in 1903, this "state of the art" factory was designed to build all-steel railroad cars on the first standardized assembly line of its kind in the world. It eventually became a massive industrial complex, contributing to Butler's reputation as a manufacturing hub.
Butler County National Bank (Lafayette Building): This six-story building, considered Butler's first "skyscraper," was completed in 1903. Designed in the French Renaissance Revival style, it initially housed the bank and the city's post office (from 1903 to 1913) and now serves as the Lafayette Apartments.
Lyndora Worker Housing: To support the rapid influx of laborers for the new steel plant, the company built one hundred frame flats almost overnight during the winter of 1902–1903. This community was named Lyndora after the daughter of one of the company founders.
Thorn Run Dam: Completed in late October 1903, the Butler Water Company built this dam to address the town's surging water consumption, which had more than doubled due to the new steel plant and population growth.
First United Methodist Church: This historic church building on West North Street was also built in 1903.
