This is a very old Antique Photo of 2 men tending what I think is a wood shaded simulated wild ginsing garden.
I use to grow Ginsing and I have been to patches that were grown this way under wooden slats for the shade, I could be wrong though, and it might be Golden Seal, anyway this is a very interesting and uncommon subject for a photograph. You might have to search for the 2 men but they are there*
