Antique Blacksmith Hand-Forged Socketed Sickle / Reaping Hook Head
Era: 19th Century (Circa 1800–1850s)
Material: Wrought Iron / Early Steel
Description:
Up for sale is a fantastic, authentic piece of early agricultural history. This is a primitive, hand-forged socketed sickle (reaping hook) tool head dating back to the 19th century.
Unlike later mass-produced versions that feature a thin metal tang driven into wood, this early piece features a beautifully wrapped tubular socket with an extended, flattened reinforcement tail. The tail features early square-punched holes designed to accommodate hand-wrought square nails or early rivets.
Condition Report:
Overall Condition: Good antique condition with a beautiful, authentic dark aged patina.
Metal: The wrought iron shows heavy, genuine pitting and oxidization consistent with a tool that is 150+ years old. The metal remains structurally solid with no active flaking rust. Metal has a thin clear laquer coating for protection.
Edge & Shape: The curved blade retains its original shape and tapers nicely to the point. The blade is unrestored.
