Technical Installation & Gap Specs
To ensure longevity and prevent "butting," these rings must be gapped correctly during installation:
- Compression Ring End Gap: Suggested range of .010" to .014" (standard maintenance manual spec). Modern industry standards for vintage British bikes often accept up to .020" without loss of performance.
- Minimum Gap Safety: Never install with a gap less than .0035" per inch of bore (approx. .009" for this application) to avoid engine seizure.
- Ring Orientation: Top compression rings typically feature a PVD chromium nitriding face; the second ring often has a black phosphate coating. Always install with any "Top" or "Size" markings facing the piston crown.
- Gap Staggering: Space the ring gaps 120 degrees apart around the piston to minimize compression blow-by.
