A wonderful collection of five clay oil lamps offered together as a lot, supplied by Parthenon Gallery, 25 Bury Place, London WC1A 2JH — a well-established London antiquities dealer located adjacent to the British Museum, specializing in ancient coins, antiquities and fossils. Original dealer provenance slip included.
The lot comprises:
1. PLAIN NOZZLE LAMP — Simple elegantly formed lamp with nozzle, minimal decoration, natural terracotta patina
2. FIGURE SCENE LAMP — Molded discus with figure scene, consistent with Roman period lamps 1st-4th century AD
3. FIGURE/ARCHITECTURAL SCENE LAMP — Molded discus with figure or architectural scene, decorative border
4. DARK GREY ROUND LAMP — Squat round form with raised fill collar and side handle, consistent with Hellenistic to early Roman style, 3rd century BC - 1st century AD. Dark grey coloring possibly from carbon deposits consistent with use
5. CHEVRON BORDER FIGURE LAMP — Molded discus with figure scene surrounded by decorative chevron/zigzag border, nozzle with wick hole
