The letters GBD on your pipe stand for the surnames of its three founders: Ganneval, Bondier, and Donninger, who established the company in Paris in 1850. The GBD brand is well-known for its classic, balanced pipe shapes and quality construction.

History

Foundation: GBD began as a manufacturer of meerschaum pipes in Paris in the mid-19th century.

Expansion: By the late 19th century, the company primarily used briarwood. A. Oppenheimer & Co. in London began importing GBD pipes in 1870 and acquired the company in 1902, expanding manufacturing to England.

Merger: In the early 1980s, GBD merged with Comoy's, and all production was consolidated under the Cadogan Investments group.

Quality & Collectibility: Pipes produced before the Cadogan merger (pre-1980s) are generally considered more collectible and are often distinguished by a metal logo or "rondelle" in the stem, like the one visible on this pipe

GBD was founded in Paris in 1850 and began as a manufacturer of meerschaum pipes. By the final decades of the nineteenth century, the company was primarily producing pipes from briar and was gaining an international reputation for quality. At the turn of the twentieth century, GBD was sold to an English firm who continued to operate factories in both England and France. For this reason, GBD pipes combined elements of both French and English shaping.

In the early 1980s, GBD, like Comoy's, was purchased by Cadogan. The pipes produced before the merger are the most collectible GBDs and are distinguished by a metal rondelle on the shank. GBDs from all eras, however, represent a good value on the estate market.
