Most vintage Banthrico banks were made of “white metal” consisting of 95% zinc, 5% aluminum and traces of copper, brass, and lead. Molds were poured individually and imperfections removed. The banks were finished and sealed in a clear lacquer. The most popular finishes were pewter and antique brass. Banks often featured a keyed trap door and coin slot on the underside. They were often given to customers as a promotional item when they opened a savings account.
