Antique 1 Gallon Wood-Jacketed Oil Can - Primitive Wood Wrapped Kerosene Jug

Item Description
Condition: Antique / "Barn Find"
This is an authentic early 20th-century wood-jacketed oil or kerosene container. It features a galvanized tin interior reservoir protected by its original vertical wooden staves. The wood has a dark, naturally aged patina consistent with long-term storage in a workshop or barn. The wire bail handle is intact and secure. This piece is being sold as a decorative primitive and has not been tested for liquid-tightness.
Product Specifications:
  • Capacity: Approximately 1 Gallon.
  • Materials: Tin/galvanized metal interior, wooden slat jacket, and heavy-gauge wire binding.
  • Design: Conical "cone top" metal header with a simple neck opening (originally used with a cork or wood plug).
  • Dimensions: Roughly 10 inches tall (base to neck).
  • Features: Attached wire bail handle for transport; horizontal wire bands holding the wooden jacket in place.
Why this is Collectible:
  • Primitive Appeal: These wood-jacketed cans were designed to protect the fragile tin inner-workings from dents and punctures, making them a perfect example of early industrial utility.
  • Rustic Decor: A standout piece for farmhouse, log cabin, or "primitive" style displays.
  • Industrial History: Used widely in early railroad maintenance and farm equipment lubrication before the adoption of all-metal or plastic containers.
