VTG 1936 WPA Pennsylvania Game Commission Cooperative Farm-Game Project Aux Sign

  • Cooperative Farm-Game Project: This program, initiated by the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) in 1936, aimed to create a partnership between the PGC and private landowners to increase hunting territory and improve wildlife habitat on farms, thereby providing more public hunting opportunities.
  • Auxiliary State Game Refuge: These areas were established within the larger Cooperative Farm-Game Project to provide safe havens for wildlife where hunting was strictly prohibited, allowing game animals to thrive and disperse into surrounding areas where hunting was permitted.
  • WPA (Works Progress Administration): The presence of "WPA" on the sign signifies that the sign itself, or the project it represented, was a part of the New Deal-era federal program designed to put unemployed people to work on public projects during the Great Depression. WPA workers often created signs and infrastructure for conservation and public lands, including those managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

In essence, this sign marked a specific location within a PGC program designed to expand hunting opportunities while simultaneously protecting wildlife,

with the added historical significance of being a product of the WPA during a period of national economic hardship.

Does have some wrinkled ends and corners.
