"But something touched me deep inside

The day the music died."

From "American Pie"

By Don McLean

Second of a two-part series

WEST MAYFIELD -- The music died in Beaver County in 1987.

That was the year Babcock & Wilcox Tubular Products Group breathed its last breath.

And with it, the hopes, dreams -- and livelihoods -- of more than 6,000 workers were snuffed out.

The company, known simply as B&W by customers throughout the world, died a slow, painful death.

Once the largest single location in the massive B&W company, the local works included the Main Tube Plant, Wallace Run Steel Plant and the East Works, the latter of which was razed in recent months. Spread out over more than 100 acres in Beaver Falls and West Mayfield borough, B&W proved to be a lucrative place to work.
